Letters: Josh Kempster – An Inspirational Young Man

Towards the end of my school career, my life was centered around sport, I was sportsman of the year in matric (Grade 12). During my first varsity rugby match I played I slipped a disk in my lower back. This was in 2010 and from then until beginning of last year I couldn’t walk more than 10 meters without taking a break to stop the pain. This is how I put on my weight, I picked up 30kgs in 2 years.

It was last year June/July when I finally had my back sorted out through physio etc and decided to make a change. The point that made me want to make the change was when I couldn’t see my toes when looking down. When I jumped on the scale and saw it read 150kgs it was confirmation that something needed to change.

My mom told me about the dukan diet and how some of her friends had lost some weight off of it. The diet was made up of a high protein low carb combination. It is broken up into 3 phases and in each phase certain foods are added back in to what you can and can’t eat.

In the first phase of the diet which lasted 2 weeks I lost 10kgs. This motivated me to stay on in the second phase. Since that time to now I’ve dropped another 40kgs to hit my target weight of 100kgs, currently just below it at 99kgs.

This diet works and I’ll always stand behind it as proof, but I do believe it is only effective when coupled with exercise. Through the course of the diet I would work out at least 4 times a week and focus most of my time on cardio. The combination is the best way to get healthy in my opinion.
